NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath fired a fresh salvo at the opposition on Saturday, saying that while BJP leaders were busy serving the people during the Covid-19 pandemic, those from other parties were in home isolation.
Speaking at an event in Etawah, the chief minister said that opposition leaders should stay home even during elections just like they did when the state was hit by the Covid crisis.
“I had come here twice during Covid times to review the situation. Our MP and both of our MLAs were serving the people of this district with health workers, district administration and corona warriors during that period. But people of other parties were in home isolation … at home when you were in a crisis. Then they should stay in their homes even during the time of elections,” he said.
Adityanath added that those can’t stand with the people during the time of crisis should get a befitting reply during the elections.
Elections in the politically crucial state are due early next year.
In a dig at those who were apparently active only on Twitter during the pandemic, Yogi said such leaders should be told that “Twitter will get them the votes too.”
The chief minister was addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone of several development projects including the inauguration of district jail.
In the 2017 UP elections, the BJP had won with a huge margin of 312 seats and secured a 39.67 per cent vote share in the elections for 403-member Assembly.
Samajwadi Party (SP) had bagged 47 seats, BSP had won 19 while Congress had bagged seven seats in the last assembly polls in the state.
