SARANAC LAKE — Saranac Lake High School Athletics inducted three new members into its Hall of Fame during halftime of a Saranac Lake high school football game on Saturday. This year’s inductees are Frank Turner, Adam VanNortwick and Steven Burpoe.

Turner

–

Turner has been a lifelong Saranac Lake resident and graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1955.

While in high school, Turner was a three-sport athlete competing in football, hockey and track. After high school, his passion for athletics continued to grow — he helped out with youth sports in Saranac Lake for over 50 years. He was involved in Little League Baseball in Saranac Lake as an umpire, coach and volunteer working on Elks Ball Field. Turner was also a longtime high school softball umpire. He remained close with high school athletics as well. Turner was a longtime member of the 5th Quarter Club, which supports the school’s football programs. He also served on the football chain gang for over 50 years.

VanNortwick

VanNortwick, a 2002 graduate of Saranac Lake High School, was a standout distance runner. He was prolific in Cross Country, qualifying all four years of high school for the New York State Meet, culminating his senior year with a fifth-place finish. In track, he held or shared three school records. His 1600-meter time of 4:19:03 still stands today. He also shared the long-standing 800-meter record that was broken in 2018. He held the 3200-meter record until just this past spring. After high school, VanNortwick continued running at Appalachian State University, where he had a successful collegiate career.

Burpoe

Burpoe graduated from Saranac Lake in 2009. While in high school, he was a three-sport athlete and a standout in each sport over the course of four years. He was a member of varsity football from his sophomore year on, and was even recognized as a first-team receiver in both his junior and senior season by the league. He finished his high school football career with over 1,100 receiving yards, 57 catches and 20 receiving touchdowns. Burpoe received first-team league recognition his senior year on the defensive side as a defensive back, along with second-team all-state honors.

Along with football, he pursued basketball, baseball and in his senior year, lacrosse. He was also a member of the chorus, men’s ensemble, and musical theatre. After graduation, he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was a member of the varsity football team there.
