GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim as three more people lost their lives in the last 24 hours, taking the state’s toll to 80 due to the deluge.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority‘s (ASDMA’s) report, two persons died in Barpeta and one in South Salmara, as 26 districts continue to remain affected by the deluge.

Central Water Commission (CWC) issued special advisories for the northeastern states due to shifting of the monsoon trough to the foothills of the Himalayas and availability of moisture for extreme precipitation, there is the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain at a few places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya in the next two days.
The CWC advisory said strict vigil is to be maintained in East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh, Dibrugarh, Jorhat and along the rail and road tracks and bridges on the rivers and regulate traffic suitably to avoid any incident.
Over 47,000 people are still homeless and have taken refuge in 290 government-managed relief camps.
Over 500 people, who were stranded because of the floods, were rescued on Friday by NDRF, SDRF and respective district administrations.
The area of affected farmlands remained constant at 1.16 lakh hectares. Over 27 lakh animals have been affected.
According to the CWC, all major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above the danger level. While there is a severe flood situation at 10 stations, it is above normal in eight.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said the entire country was with Assam, which is facing a grim flood situation, and expressed confidence that the people of the state will overcome the natural disaster.
“The entire nation is with Assam. People of Assam are battling this problem with their courageous nature and will overcome this disaster,” Gandhi said in a tweet.
He also urged Congress workers to extend all possible help to those affected by the deluge.
