Bengaluru: India made the highest number of requests for user information and content removal to TikTok, according to the Chinese short-video apps’ latest transparency report, during the July-Dec period last year.

TikTok was among the 59 Chinese apps banned by India last month for allegedly weak user privacy standards.

The report showed India made a total of 302 requests and TikTok complied with 90 percent of those requests. The United States followed India with 78 requests. TikTok complied with 82% of the US’s requests.

Of the 302 requests by India, 291 were legal requests and 11 were emergency requests. A total of 408 accounts were mentioned in these reports.

Emergency requests are those where TikTok complies with the requests for data without a legal process.

Apart from requests for user information, the Indian government made 30 requests to remove content from 35 user accounts. With respect to content policy violations, TikTok removed 16,453,360 videos in India.

TikTok said the report provides insight into the volume and nature of requests it receives from law enforcement bodies around the world and how it responds to them.

In the first 6 months of last year, India sent 107 total requests for user information, showing an almost three times jump in request for user data by the government and law enforcement agencies.
