Artificial Intelligence

Approximately 15 million girls and young women have experienced sexual assault or rape at some point in their life.

Outrage! India is burning with outrage, as another incidence of gang rape and the death has sent the Indian Judicial system into a spiral. The rates of Rape are not novel in the Indian Diaspora. They are prevalent because of the sheer negligence, and lack of accountability by the Indian governments and administration. No laws have been implemented to mitigate rape and sexual assaults. Even though some projects have been recognized to mitigate the events of rape and sexual harassment, their grassroots reach is less to none.

India is not the only country with an increase in gender harassment cases. Over the past months, the world has witnessed the resistance by Women in Mexico as well. In Mexico, the women took over streets as the country enraged with protests, demanded the paralyzed government to make a law that would quell the gender-based crime in the country.

Moreover, the Republic of Congo is another country, where the increase in gender-based crimes is alarming in the United Nations. Undoubtedly gender-based crimes and sexual harassments are not limited to a particular country region or gender. But it is cancer that challenges the integrity of an individual human and society.

As Artificial Intelligence is already permeating the industry and organizational set-up, its role in mitigating gender-based violence is heavily scrutinized. Innovative solutions have been put forward so that the gender-based violence incidents can be acknowledged.

Analytics Insight brings the top AI solutions that are assisting to mitigate sexual assault cases.

Safecity and Omdena

Formed after the 2012 Nirbhaya Gang-rape in India, this AI model is a collaborative technique by Omdena and Safecity project. This model leverages open-sourced data as well as Safecity’s database to build heatmaps, and safe routes using Nearby Search, Directions API and Grid Coverage techniques. The Safecity platform acts as a crowd sourced place where individuals can share their personal stories of sexual assaults and rapes. By integrating Machine learning and data analytics, these cases of sexual harassment in public spaces can be categorized based on the place, time and type of harassment.

Sis bot

One of the most challenging tasks, associated with sexual assault is timely registration and reporting of the sexual assault cases. However, due to the societal pressure, these cases either do not get reported, or details of the sexual assaults do not get registered properly. Hence, to counter this problem, Lieutenant Colonel Peabrom Mekhiyanont, created a chatbot which provides a holistic approach to help victims from the beginning to the end of the process. Known as Sis bot, this technology provides 24/7 information services like how to report to the police, how to preserve evidence, and what support services or compensation the sexual assault survivors are entitled to by law.

Nex AI-

In the wake of #metoo movement, the Nex AI model assists in preventing sexual harassment and assault in an organizational set-up. By leveraging Machine learning algorithms to identify potential bullying, and sexual harassment in company’s documents, emails and chats, the bot helps in analyzing and reading the anomalies in the language, frequency or timing of communication, thus drawing the patterns across weeks. Once the pattern is analyzed, this is sent to the lawyer and the HR manager for further investigation. It has already been deployed in 50 global firms including the law firms across London.

Callisto

As the sexual assault cases across campuses are gaining momentum, Callisto provides a platform for detecting the sexual assault and rape offenders. By leveraging artificial intelligence, the system detects the repeat offenders of sexual assaults by a process known as matching. Once the details of the sexual offenders are entered into the system, the information is put in line until another survivor reports and registers a similar detail of the offender and the incident. With the help of this technology, the serial perpetrator can be identified regardless of the university affiliation. The two survivors are also provided with legal assistance with the Callisto. This technology has been widely accepted across the US colleges and is also penetrating in the organizational set-up of Silicon valley.

Aware

Another technology that has been evolving for mitigating sexual assault cases in the organizational set-up is Aware. It leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning, specifically in the Human resources, so that the organizations can identify, investigate and handle offensive communications in the early stage, without requiring the victim to report the case to the superior. It leverages Predictive AI to identify the compromising behaviour of the employees within an organization.

DeepVision AI and Shepherd AI

To mitigate the risk of human trafficking and rape incidents, DeepVision AI and ShepherdVision AI in a collaborative aim leverages cutting edge visual recognition tools such as personal attributes and facial recognition to identify the human trafficking and rape survivors. The two companies have also developed software to protect the patrons in the spa from sexual assault and rapes.

Botler AI

Founded by Ritika Dutt, the Botler AI leverages natural language processing to determine whether an incident classifies as sexual harassment or other crime. It is created by using 3,00,000 user document cases in Canada, and the USA. Moreover, its Conversational AI focuses on giving the sexual assault and rape survivor an understanding, whether their experience falls under the Violation of US criminal code or Canadian Law/. This technology is still under the nascent stage but mainly focuses to draw sexual assault parallels from the testimonies of the victims.

Spot

Spot is another chatbot, utilized by organizations to mitigate the incidence of sexual assaults. Most often the complaints of sexual assault are either received by the wrong person or are improperly documented. By integrating AI into the system, the chatbot documents more information upfront, reduces investigation time and captures 29% more details about the incident in initial reports.

Nimb

Nimb is another technology that helps in preventing sexual assault cases. Designed as a ring, Bluetooth is integrated at the centre of the ring. In an emergency situation, by pressing the ring, the Bluetooth sends alerts to pre-listed contacts in the phone. The response time is 30 seconds.

Sawdhaan app

Founded in 2018, this technology is said to be the first AI-based app to prevent sexual assaults and rapes in India. This app is available in the play store and can be activated by using the mobile application. Once the app becomes activated it sends distress message and call to the primary contact every five minutes in an emergency situation. With the help of the AI technology, a consolidated report is made about the person’s location, and the surrounding voices, which will be sent to the guardians via SMS. This is specifically useful to quell down incidents of gangrape like Hathras, Hyderabad and New Delhi.
