UGC Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar is in talks with worldwide e-book publishers to debate the probabilities of bringing out undergraduate English textual content books in Indian languages in increased schooling establishments throughout the nation 

The UGC intends to translate a lot of textbooks in Indian languages within the coming six to 12 months and also will encourage Indian authors/academicians to write down textbooks in varied Indian languages and can contain publishers in bringing these out, Kumar mentioned.

The UGC has additionally shaped an Apex committee to organize a street map and work in direction of bringing out textual content books in Indian languages utilized in undergraduate programmes reminiscent of BA, BCom and BSc, he added.

The dialogue with international publishers laid stress upon bringing out translation of textbooks in Indian languages reminiscent of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Odiya, Bengali, Assamese, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu.

Representatives from Wiley India, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, Cambridge University Press India, Cengage India and McGraw-Hill India participated within the interplay and expressed their willingness to be companions on this nationwide mission, he mentioned.

The UGC will present handholding to the publishers relating to identification of textbooks, translation instruments and consultants for enhancing.

“A model will be worked out with publishers to provide textbooks at affordable prices in a digital format. Initial focus will be on translation of existing textbooks in BA, BSc and BCom programmes which will later be expanded to postgraduate programmes as well,” Kumar mentioned.

“The UGC can also be in talks with the Indian publishers who publish books in English to debate the opportunity of bringing these books in Indian languages. Students’ studying ought to occur by way of their mom tongue to grasp the topic and enhance their studying outcomes. 

“At the same time, students should also become proficient in English as a tool for communication since they also need to connect with people across the globe,” the UGC chairman mentioned.
