Speaking to the UN in New York from Kyiv this afternoon, Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said “Russia has put the world on the brink of radiation catastrophe” when it comes to Zaporizhzhia power plant.

The nuclear plant, which is the biggest in Europe, is under Russian control, but has seen explosions and strikes over the last few weeks.

Both sides have blamed each other.

He said: “It is a fact that the Russian military has turned the territory of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, into a war zone.

“Now Europe and neighbouring regions face the threat of radiation pollution.”

Mr Zelenskyy also called for the UN’s nuclear agency to take full control of the site, to ensure its safety.
