Union College athletics announced Monday that it is canceling the fall sports season because of the coronavirus pandemic

Union becomes the second Capital Region college to cancel its fall sports programs. RPI canceled its fall sports schedule on June 30.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and entire community will remain our top priority,” Union athletic director Jim McLaughlin said in a press release. “In order to follow the measures required to protect all campus community members — including social distancing policies, required use of personal protective equipment and reduced off-campus travel — we will be unable to provide intercollegiate athletic competition in its traditional form during the fall season.”

The Liberty League, which Union and RPI are members, announced July 7 that it was trying to start the fall sports season on Sept. 26 at the earliest.

In the press release, Union said it is formulating other opportunities for the fall student-athletes, including a potential for spring competition. Union is also in continued conversation with our ECAC Hockey and Liberty League partners regarding winter and spring athletics seasons. It expects to announce plans for these sports by Sept. 15.
