Steelers try to extend Monday night home streak

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers will try to push their home winning streak on Monday nights to 20 when they host Chicago. The Steelers haven’t lost in Pittsburgh on Monday night since 1991.

The Bears have won each of their last three meetings with the Steelers but come to Pittsburgh struggling. Chicago has dropped three consecutive games, all by double digits.

The Steelers have won three in a row following a 1-3 start to climb out of last place in the AFC North.

NBA-SCHEDULE

Sixers look for seventh

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers return home with a six-game winning streak as they host the New York Knicks.

The Brooklyn Nets, riding a five-game win streak, are in Chicago to play the Bulls.

The Golden State Warriors carry the NBA’s best record so far this season — 8-and-1 — into tonight’s game at home against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Phoenix Suns — who, like the Warriors, have won four in a row — play the Kings in Sacramento.

The schedule also includes Memphis hosting Minnesota, New Orleans visiting the Mavericks, the Nuggets against the Miami Heat in Denver, and the Lakers hosting Charlotte.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Panthers on record pace

NEW YORK (AP) — If they can beat the Rangers tonight at Madison Square Garden, the Florida Panthers will match the best 12-game start in NHL history. The Panthers are 10-0-and-1 so far this season.

Tonight’s other NHL action finds the Capitals hosting the Sabres, and Los Angeles at Toronto.

NCAA-RESTRUCTURING

NCAA streamlines constitution, set to give power to schools

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA has set the stage for a dramatic restructuring of college sports.

The nation’s biggest and most influential governing body in college athletics released a draft of an 18 1/2-page constitution. That is cut down from 43 pages. It focuses more on the NCAA’s broader goals of athlete welfare.

Most important, it would provide Division I the autonomy to reshape everything from how revenue is shared to how rules are made and enforced.

The next nine months will see more work done on the details.

MLB-TWINS-TINGLER

Twins hire former Padres manager Tingler as bench coach

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Former San Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler has been hired as bench coach of the Minnesota Twins.

David Popkins will be Minnesota’s new hitting coach.

The 40-year-old Tingler went 116-106 over two seasons with the Padres. They made the playoffs in 2020. They collapsed down the stretch this year, resulting in Tingler’s dismissal. Tingler spent 13 seasons in a variety of roles with the Texas Rangers before going to San Diego.

The 31-year-old Popkins was the hitting coach for the Class A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-TEXAS TECH-MCGUIRE

AP source: Texas Tech to hire Baylor’s Joey McGuire as coach

UNDATED (AP) — A person familiar with the decision says Texas Tech is finalizing a deal to hire Baylor assistant and longtime Texas high school coach Joey McGuire as its next head coach.

McGuire is in his fifth season with Baylor. He was hired by former Bears coach Matt Rhule and retained as associate head coach when Dave Aranda took over in 2020.

McGuire is replacing Matt Wells. The former Utah State coach was fired in the middle of his third season with the Red Raiders.
