Bengals bury Ravens in Baltimore

UNDATED (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens have company atop the AFC North.

Joe Burrow threw for a career-high 416 yards and three touchdowns, including a pivotal 82-yarder to rookie Ja’Marr Chase in the third quarter of Cincinnati’s 41-17 dismantling of the Ravens in Baltimore. Chase had eight catches for 201 yards, easily the most productive performance of his impressive debut season. He also set an NFL record for most yards receiving over his first seven career games.

Lamar Jackson threw for 257 yards and ran for 88, but he was sacked five times as the Ravens had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Both teams are 5-2, but the Bengals hold the tiebreaker after beating Baltimore.

Elsewhere in Week 7 of the NFL season:

— The Cardinals remain the league’s only unbeaten team after Kyler Murray completed 20 of 28 passes for 261 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in a 31-5 thrashing of the Texans. DeAndre Hopkins caught a touchdown pass against his former team and Zach Ertz grabbed a scoring pass for his new team, helping the Cardinals improve to 7-0 for the first time since 1974. James Conner added an 18-yard touchdown run and Ertz had a 47-yard scoring grab, the longest of his career.

— Tom Brady became the first player to throw 600 career touchdown passes, reaching the milestone in the Buccaneers’ 38-3 thrashing of the Bears. Brady completing 20 of 36 passes for 211 yards and four TDs as the Bucs improved to 6-1, the best seven-game start in franchise history. Tampa Bay’s defense had three interceptions, sacked Justin Fields four times and caused the quarterback to fumble twice.

— The Packers earned their sixth consecutive win as Aaron Rodgers went 27 of 35 for 274 yards and three touchdowns in their 24-10 decision over Washington. Davante Adams, Allen Lazard and Robert Tonyan provided the scoring grabs for the NFC North leaders. Washington outgained Green Bay 430-304 but had five scoreless trips inside the Packers 30-yard line, including back-to-back series that ended inside the 5.

— Matthew Stafford passed for 334 yards and three touchdowns against his former team, guiding the Rams’ offense to a 28-19 victory against the Lions. Cooper Kupp had 10 catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams, including the go-ahead score with 13:59 to play. Goff passed for 268 yards and nearly led the 0-7 Lions to an upset win in his first meeting with the Rams since they traded him to Detroit for Stafford.

— Ryan Tannehill threw for a touchdown and ran for another in the Titans’ 27-3 stifling of the Chiefs. Tannehill amassed 270 passing yards and Tennessee turned three Kansas City turnovers into 10 points as the 5-2 Titans completed a six-day sweep of last season’s AFC title game participants. Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ’) turned the ball over twice and was sacked four times.

— The Raiders earned a 33-22 victory against the Eagles as Derek Carr threw for 323 yards, completing 31 of 34 pass attempts with one touchdown. Four different Raiders scored touchdowns as Kenyon Drake and Bryan Edwards found the end zone in the third quarter. Las Vegas lost running back Josh Jacobs to a chest injury after he ran for 29 yards on six attempts, including one touchdown.

— Matt Ryan passed for 336 yards, and Younghoe Koo made a 36-yard field goal as time expired to give the Falcons a 30-28 win over the 1-5 Dolphins. Pitts had seven catches for 163 yards, the last 28 of those on a sideline route with just under two minutes left. Koo’s third field goal of the game saved Atlanta after the 3-3 Falcons wasted a 13-point fourth-quarter lead.

— Daniel Jones tossed a 5-yard scoring pass and made a spectacular one-handed 16-yard catch on the game’s only meaningful touchdown drive in leading the Giants’ 25-3 victory over the Panthers. Jones finished 23 of 33 for 203 yards and had six carries for 30 yards. Graham Gano (gah-NOH’) kicked field goals of 49, 53 and 44 yards as the 2-5 Giants handed Carolina its fourth consecutive loss since a 3-0 start.

— The Patriots enjoyed a 54-13 laugher over the Jets as rookie Mac Jones threw two touchdown passes in his first 300-yard game. Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor ran for two TDs to help New England earn its 12th straight victory and sixth consecutive season sweep over the 1-5 Jets. Jones finished 24 of 36 for 307 yards, and Harris rushed 14 times for 106 yards for the 3-4 Patriots.

NBA-SCHEDULE

Hornets have first 3-0 start

UNDATED (AP) — The Charlotte Hornets are 3-0 for the first time in franchise history.

Miles Bridges had 32 points and nine rebounds, Ish Smith added 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter of the Hornets’ 111-95 win at Brooklyn. LaMelo Ball had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists to help Charlotte drop the Nets to 1-2.

Kevin Durant scored 38 points for the Nets.

There was a demonstration outside Barclays Center before the Nets’ home opener. Supporters of Nets guard Kyrie Irving chanted “Let Kyrie play! Let Kyrie play!”

A small group even broke through barriers and got all the way to the front entrance of the building, forcing arena officials to briefly close the doors while fans were trying to get in.

Irving is not with the Nets because of his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Checking out Sunday’s other NBA action:

— Seth Curry delivered 23 of his 28 points in the first quarter to help the 76ers beat the Thunder, 115-103. Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ ehm-BEED’) added 22 points and nine rebounds for Philadelphia.

— Terrence Ross scored all 22 of his points in the fourth quarter as the Magic dealt the Knicks their first loss of the season, 110-104. Cole Anthony recorded his first career double-double with 29 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

— The Celtics avoided their first 0-3 start in seven years as Jayson Tatum had 31 points and nine rebounds in their 107-97 victory against Houston. Al Horford added 11 of his 17 points in the third period and finished with 10 rebounds.

NHL-SCHEDULE

B’s hand Sharks first loss

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins have ended the San Jose Sharks’ perfect start to the season.

Brad Marchand scored 28 seconds into the game and added an assist as the Bruins dealt the Sharks their first loss in five games, 4-3. David Pastrnak (PAHS’-tur-nahk) and Derek Forbort each had a goal and an assist for the B’s, who hung on after San Jose tallied twice over the final 6:41.

Linus Ullmark (LEE’-nuhs OOL’-mahrk) finished with 23 saves in the victory.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— The Blackhawks remain winless after Lucas Raymond had three goals and an assist in the Red Wings’ 6-3 verdict over Chicago. The No. 4 overall pick in last year’s draft recorded his first career hat trick in his sixth NHL game.

— Roman Josi (YOH’-see) had a four-point game and Connor Ingram won his first NHL start as the Predators handed the Wild their first loss in five games this season, 5-2. Josi had a goal and three assists to support Ingram’s 33 save effort.

NHL-BLACKHAWKS-VIRUS OUTBREAK

Hawks have 3 more positive COVID-19 tests

CHICAGO (AP) — Blackhawks defenseman Riley Stillman and forward Jujhar Khaira joined Patrick Kane in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol before Sunday’s game against the Red Wings.

The Blackhawks announced Sunday morning that forward Ryan Carpenter and defenseman Erik Gustafsson had been removed from COVID-19 protocol. But there was no word on Kane.

Assistant Marc Crawford was prevented from coaching on Sunday because of the protocol.

Astros’ Valdez to start Game 1 of World Series vs Braves

HOUSTON (AP) — The starting pitchers have been announced for Game 1 of the World Series between the Houston Astros and visiting Atlanta Braves.

Framber Valdez gets the nod for the Astros following a brilliant performance in his previous start. He is the only hurler in the postseason to last eight innings, allowing one run and three hits in a Game 5 victory over the Red Sox in the AL Championship Series.

The Braves will counter with Charlie Morton, who pitched for Houston from 2017-18 and got the win in Game 7 of the 2017 World Series.

Work stoppage almost certain on Dec. 2

HOUSTON (AP) — Baseball’s ninth work stoppage and first in 26 years appears almost certain to start Dec. 2, freezing the free-agent market and threatening the start of spring training in February.

Negotiations have been taking place since last spring, and each side thinks the other has not made proposals that will lead toward an agreement replacing the five-year contract that expires at 11:59 p.m. EST on Dec. 1.

The luxury tax system that started with the 2003 season sunsets with the expiration of the labor contract, with the exception of completing accounting and payments for the 2021 tax year. Uncertainty over the 2022 season probably will cause high-spending clubs to delay reaching pricier player agreements.

Alabama jumps OU to No. 3

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama has inched up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football, behind top-ranked Georgia and No. 2 Cincinnati.

The Bulldogs are a unanimous No. 1 for the third straight week. The Bearcats remain second after grinding out a win against Navy.

The Crimson Tide jumped up a spot past Oklahoma after blowing out Tennessee. The now fourth-ranked Sooners were shut out in the first half against Kansas before scoring 35 in the second half and pulling away late.

Fifth-ranked Ohio State is followed by Michigan, Oregon, Michigan State, Iowa and Mississippi.

Larson puts bright spot on sad anniversary for Hendrick

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Larson’s series-high ninth win of the year comes on a most meaningful date in his new job with Hendrick Motorsports.

Larson drove the No. 5 Chevrolet to victory lane at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, the 17th anniversary of a Hendrick plane crash that killed all 10 people aboard. The plane was traveling to a race in Virginia and among those killed was Rick Hendrick’s only son.

The victory was Larson’s third consecutive and fourth win over the last six playoff races.

Larson beat reigning Cup champion and Hendrick teammate Chase Elliott by 3.619-seconds for the win.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS-DOMINION ENERGY CLASSIC

Langer sets record in win

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Bernhard Langer has become the oldest winner in PGA Tour Champions history by beating Doug Barron with a 6-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff in the Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

Langer closed with a 3-under 69, also birdieing the par-5 18th in regulation to match Barron at 14-under.

At 64 years, 1 month, 27 days, Langer broke the age record of 63 years, 5 months, 4 days set by Scott Hoch when he teamed with Tom Pernice (pur-NEES’) Jr. to win in the 2019 Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf.

Second-round leader Steve Flesch was third at 12 under after a 73.

FORMULA ONE-TEXAS

Verstappen edges Hamilton

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Max Verstappen held off Formula One title rival Lewis Hamilton over the final thrilling laps of the U.S. Grand Prix in Texas.

Verstappen’s eighth win of the season gives him a 12-point lead over Hamilton with five races remaining. He is seeking his first F1 title.
