US slaps sanctions on ISIS, al-Qaeda supporters in Maldives

The US has imposed sanctions on 20 people and 29 firms for offering monetary assist to operations of ISIS and al-Qaeda terrorist teams within the Maldives.

State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller stated on Monday that the purpose of those designations is to discourage and disrupt monetary and different types of assist for terrorist actions throughout the Maldives.

Among these named within the sanctions are 18 ISIS and ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-Ok) facilitators and two al-Qaeda operatives, together with 29 related firms.

The focused people and entities have been linked to Mohamad Ameen, a key ISIS-Ok recruiter who was beforehand designated by the United States in 2019.

Some of the designated people have been concerned in planning and executing assaults in opposition to journalists and native authorities.

“The United States is steadfast in its commitment to counter the threats posed by these terrorist support networks, both locally and internationally, and to ensure they are deprived of funding and resources for carrying out attacks,” Miller stated.
