SportsPulse: Paul Myerberg and Dan Wolken dissect how college football got to this point and rendered completely helpless to the raging pandemic in America.

The bell has finally tolled on University of West Florida football and the 2020 fall season.

The Gulf South Conference announced the official postponement of its fall sports schedule on Tuesday, driving in the final nail on college football at the Division II level in Pensacola for 2020.

Last week, NCAA officials announced the cancellation of its fall championships in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, leaving conference schedules as the last remaining options for Division II football. Numerous Division II programs and conferences had already canceled 2020 seasons.

The GSC’s announcement indicated that fall sports and select winter sports would be postponed until at least Jan. 1, 2021.

The GSC’s postponement will also affect fall team sports such as volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, as well as high-contact winter sports like basketball.

With the move, UWF will remain the reigning football national champion for far longer than previously expected. The Argos won the 2019 national championship 48-40 over Minnesota State in McKinney, Texas, earning the highest prize in Division II football in just the program’s fourth season.
