Venice Film Festival: Chaitanya Tamhane’s ‘The Disciple’ Bags Best Screenplay Award

It’s tough to come around good news nowadays because those who should be giving us “news” are running debates and discussions of Sushant Singh Rajput, Rhea Chakraborty, and Kangana Ranaut. Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 cases are rising, economy is plunging, journalists are getting harassed (And even killed), and democracy in India is dying a slow death (Not because part of your favourite rich celebrity’s house has been demolished) because of the vilification of the just and the celebration of the unjust. That said, I’ve some good news, all thanks to Chaitanya Tamhane and his latest feature, The Disciple.

Tamhane’s previous feature, Court, was nominated for best screenwriter at the 9th Asian Film Awards, won best director at the 16th Mumbai Film Festival, and bagged the Best Film in the Horizons category and the Luigi De Laurentiis award at the 71st Venice International Film Festival. This year, he has taken home the FIPRESCI Critics Prize and the Best Screenplay award for The Disciple. The award was presented by the one and only Cate Blanchett. Tamhane accepted the award via a video message where he said,

“I am back in Mumbai and am missing being there. I so wish that the team could’ve been there to collect the award. Rest assured, we will surely be popping open some champagne in Mumbai to celebrate this award. Writing The Disciple was by far the most challenging and painful endeavour I have ever undertaken. This honour means a lot to me and it will encourage me to keep pushing my own boundaries even further. I want to dedicate this award to all the musicians, researchers, authors, and historians who helped open the doors to the incredible world of Indian classical music for me. To win a Best Screenplay award amongst such stalwarts is just an incredible feat. I am really grateful to the jury and very proud of Chaitanya. It’s the hardest and the loneliest job, but the final script was also what convinced me to back the film.”

Tamhane’s win didn’t go unnoticed, despite everything that’s going on, and was hugely celebrated by the good people on the internet. Here are some of the reactions:

I think that one thing that needs to get normalised is movies getting picked up for international distribution after it wins prestigious prizes like this. Because I have seen multiple movies win big at film festivals and rot on the backburner for years. Eventually it loses the buzz that it had received during its festival run and then the people are blamed for not coming around to watch it. The Disciple has Alfonso Cuaron attached to it as executive producer. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed for him to pull some strings and get Tamhane’s movie a digital release (Because theatrical isn’t possible right now). All that said, cheers to Tamhane and his team for this international acclaim!
