After plenty of solid fall sports performers over the last week, here are the nominees for the Journal Star high school athlete of the week for Oct. 11-16.

Thomas Borges, Washington football

The senior running back rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown as the Panthers remained atop the Mid-Illini Conference standings with 24-14 home win over league rival Metamora on Friday. His lone score on the night came on a third-and-2 from 39 yards out. The Panthers (6-2, 5-1) can lock up no less than a share of the Mid-Illini crown with a win over East Peoria (0-8, 0-6) in Week 9.

Shemar Williams, Tremont football

The Turks (6-2) officially clinched a spot in the playoffs thanks to the fullback. Williams rushed 34 times for 285 yards and two touchdowns in Tremont’s 27-19 win over El Paso-Gridley in the Heart of Illinois Conference-Large Division action.

Josh Walton, Peoria Christian boys soccer

The freshman goalkeeper made the game-sealing save as PCS claimed a 1-0 Class 1A regional championship victory over Roanoke-Benson/Eureka on Saturday. Walton’s save in the sixth round of PKs sent the Chargers (12-8-2) home with their first regional plaque since 2018. PCS faces Mendota (21-0-0) at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Chillicothe Sectional semifinals.

Soccer pairs: 2021 IHSA boys soccer postseason pairings, schedules, scores for Peoria area

Mason Stoeger, Fieldcrest boys cross country

The senior captured the Heart of Illinois Conference individual title on Saturday at Lower Lake Park in Eureka. Stoeger blew away the field on 3-mile course, clocking in at 15 minutes, 45.4 seconds — 39.4 seconds better than the runner-up. Fieldcrest finished fifth as a team with El Paso-Gridley claiming the conference championship with 46 points.

Kate Robertson, Dunlap girls cross country

The freshman picked up the first of what could be four Mid-Illini Conference individual championships on Friday. Robertson won on the historic, 3-mile Detweiller Park course in 18:26.8 — nearly 13 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. The Eagles claimed the team title with 30 points.

Richwoods girls tennis

The Knights ended a 10-year streak without a sectional title, winning at Geneseo on Saturday. Richwoods outdistanced itself from Dunlap and Notre Dame with 24 points to its opponents’ 19 points. Singles champion Julia Wojtowicz along with doubles champs Olivia Reynolds and Theresa Bartelme will head to the state finals in Buffalo Grove on Thursday.

Meghan Sears, Washington girls swimming and diving

The senior won the 1-meter diving at Saturday’s Galesburg Invite. Sears posted a score of 398.30, almost 15 points better than runner-up Elana Keyster of Mid-Illini Conference foe Dunlap, who had a 383.95.

Kayla Pacha, Metamora volleyball

The senior outside hitter hops on the AOW ballot for the second time this season following a great outing against Morton on Tuesday. Pacha went for 16 kills and two blocks as the Redbirds beat Mid-Illini Conference rival Morton, 25-22, 25-16. Metamora (30-1, 12-0) then locked up a share of the Mid-Illini title on Thursday in a win over Pekin.

Allison deFreese, Eureka volleyball

The sophomore setter went off in a three-set nonconference thriller over Brimfield on Monday. deFreese recorded 32 assists and five aces in the 23-25, 25-17, 25-19 victory. She then added 13 assists in a loss to Tremont on Tuesday.
