NEW DELHI: At least 32 people are confirmed dead and 53 wounded in yet another attack on a Shiite mosque in southern Afghanistan. This is the second attack this month on a Shiite mosque in the country.
The blast near the Imam Bargah mosque in Kandahar city occurred during the Friday prayers, a spokesman of the Taliban government’s interior ministry said. Some eye-witnesses said there were more than one explosion.
Photographs posted by journalists on social media showed many people apparently dead or seriously wounded on the floor of the mosque. Further details are awaited. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
Last Friday too, a Shiite mosque was targeted by a suicide bomber in Kunduz province, killing nearly fifty people.
The Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the attack on its Telegram channels.
