Massachusetts high school sports will take place this fall.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Board of Directors approved a recommendation from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the MIAA’s COVID-19 Task Force Wednesday morning that will allow for moderate risk sports to play during the fall season and higher risk sports, such as football, to play during a “floating season” to take place in the spring.

The vote was approved unanimously.

The guidance follows the recommended proposal reportedly made by the MIAA’s COVID-19 Task Force committee.

A fall season featuring golf, cross country, field hockey, soccer, gymnastics and volleyball would begin practices starting Sept. 18.

Football, cheerleading and unified basketball, however, will only be allowed to practice during that time. After the winter sports season, a “floating season” — or a second fall season — that features football, cheerleading and unified basketball will take place.

That floating season is followed by a spring season. The recommended start dates were as follows:

  • Sept. 18 – Nov. 20 — Fall Sports
  • Nov. 30 – Feb. 21 — Winter Sports
  • Feb. 22 – April 25 — Fall Sports II (”Floating season”)
  • April 26 – July 3 — Spring season

Sports will be required to follow the EEA’s guidelines for modification. Every fall sport except for golf and cross country was listed as at least a moderate risk. Those modifications include eliminating deliberate contact and minimizing intermittent contact as well as increased distancing.

This article will be updated with more information.
